Brother Smith of Sangerville joined Chaplin Camp #3 in 2012 and served as Camp CW Memorials Officer for several years. He transferred to Col. C.S. Douty Camp #11 as a Charter Member at the beginning of this year. Ron was proud of his family’s patriotic and military history and served as a flight engineer in the Navy. He was also active in the American Legion and performed chaplain duties at numerous local Memorial Day ceremonies. He was 72.

SANGERVILLE – Ronald V. Smith passed away unexpectedly, on October 28, 2020, at Mayo Regional Hospital. Ron was born, February 22, 1948, in South Charleston, WV, to Darrell V. and Verna Mae (Brammer) Smith. He was the eldest of three sons.

As a young man, he served as an acolyte, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, in St. Albans, WV. Ron graduated from St. Albans High School, in 1966 and attended Marshall University, in Huntington, WV. Ron was very proud of his country and his family had a long and patriotic history. He was a descendant of Peregrine White, the first Mayflower child born in Cape Cod Harbor, MA. His great-grandfather, Lorenzo D. W. Brammer, fought at Bull Run, (Union Army, Infantry). He was wounded twice. His father, Darrell, served as a Navy Corpsman, in World War II. Ron continued the family military history and served as a flight engineer, on P-3 Orion aircraft, for his squadron, VP-11. Ron worked for Central Maine Power, as a chemist, at Wyman Station. At work, he made long-time friends. Many became his hunting, fishing, and golfing buddies.

Over the years, Ron served his community, in many ways. Recently, he served as the president of the Guilford-Sangerville Water District Board and was a board member of the Sangerville Development Corp. (Oakes Manor). He served on many Town of Sangerville committees including Budget, Abbie Fowler School and Road, etc. He belonged to the Sangerville Historical Society. He was responsible for the spectacular Bicentennial parade, in 2014. He belonged to service organizations.: The American Legion (Chaplin, Post 165, Sangerville). He was a 31 year member of the Freemasons. He served as Master of the Freeport Lodge #23, in 1995 and later affiliated with the Abner Wade Lodge# 207, in Sangerville, where he served in many chairs and actively participated in the Santa Project and the Bikes for Books Program. Ron was also a member of the Portland-St. Albans Commandery, #2, Knights Templar and Scottish Rites, Valley of Portland. He was a member of Widows Sons Temple Guard, North Woods Chapter. Ron loved riding his motorcycle and belonged to The Patriot Riders, Maine Chapter 3 and The Legion Riders, Post 73, Corinna. He belonged to The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Daniel Chaplin Camp #3.
Most of all, Ron loved his family and friends. He will be remembered as a friendly, smiling guy, ready, willing and able to talk to everyone. He helped others whenever the need arose. He loved NASCAR, entertaining friends, BBQs, Hockey (UMO & Anaheim Ducks), our annual trip to California and breezing along on his Harley. Ron was an honorary member of the P.C.H.S. Class of 1963 and loved helping with projects, reunions, fun times and good food.

Ron is survived by his loving wife, of 23 years, Pamela (Stewart) Smith; his brother, Scott (Susie) Smith; his brothers-in law, Robert (Dee Dee) Stewart and Brian (Diann) Stewart; his children, Jeffrey (Andrea) Smith, Jody (Tyrone) Singleton, and Jason Smith; his stepdaughters, Kiesha (Mike) Kober, and Kristi (Mark) LePore-Williams; grandchildren, Nicholas, Courtney, and Ryleigh Smith; Xavier, Kaia, and Quinton Singleton, Kathryn (Chris) and Christopher (Amy) Kober and Lauren LePore; great-grandchildren, Roger and Mya Kober; his “doggie children,” Dash and Wolfie; many nephews, nieces and friends.

Ron was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Rick Smith; his baby son, Marc Smith; parents-in-law, Robert (Bob) and Louine Stewart; and his stepson, Philip (Randy) LePore.

Thanks to the E.R. staff at Mayo Regional Hospital for their kind and considerate care and to Dr. Marie Albert and the many outstanding staff members at the Bangor and Togus Veterans’ Clinics. Special thanks to our friend, Sharon (Leighton) Meredith, who was there from the day we met until Ron’s last earthly moments. Finally, thank you to everyone who touched Ron’s life and made it special.
