The Death of George H. Bangs

Ass’t State Auditor and Much Valued Citizen of Orono

ORONO, May 19 – George H. Bangs passed away Monday afternoon at his apartment on Main street after an illness of two years.

Mr. Bangs was born in Bath the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Bangs and was 60 years old.  He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gertrude Stone Bangs; two sons, Milton S. Bangs of Detroit, Mich., George Henry Bangs Jr., of Bangor, and one daughter, Mrs. Charles Rich of Bangor and three beloved grandchildren who have the deepest sympathy of a wide circle of friends.

Mr. Bangs had been deputy state auditor for 20 years and resident state auditor at the University of Maine for the past 10 years, living at the University Inn and the apartment over the waiting room.

By his genial, pleasing personality, he made many friends and everyone loved him, and will miss him much.  Mr. Bangs was a 32d degree Mason, a member of Abnaki Club of Augusta, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, of the Orono Golf Club and all the social orders.

Funeral of the Late George H. Bangs – Poppy Day Saturday – Notes

ORONO, May 22 – Funeral services of George H. Bangs were held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock from the home of Professor and Mrs. W.J. Sweetser with Rev. Charles Manford Sharps of the Fellowship church assisted by Rev. Howard Davis Spoerle of the Universalist church officiating.

The flowers were beautiful and profuse beyond description, there being many set pieces from the several orders to which the deceased belonged and cut flowers in great profusion, all silent tokens of love and esteem in which he was held.  The honorary bearers were Justice C.J. Dunn, President H.S. Boardman, Dean J.S. Stevens, and Dean L.S. Merrill; the active bearers were State Auditor Elbert Hayford, James A. Gannett, George B. Gould and Fred C. Park.  After the services, Undertaker A.F. Russell took the body to Augusta where a Masonic commitment service was held at the Mt. Forest cemetery.
